Shichijo Melon Dome — Where Only the Sweetest Melons Make the Cut (English below)
山鹿から南阿蘇方面へ通じる国道325号沿い、山鹿のお隣、菊池市七城町に「道の駅 七城メロンドーム」があります。山鹿からのドライブ途中に立ち寄れる、人気の道の駅です。
目印は、この建物。屋根が丸ごとメロンの形をしていて、つる(ヘタ)まで付いています。メロンのドームが3つ並んでいて、遠くからでもすぐ分かります。周りは田園地帯なので、緑のドームがぽこんと浮かんで見える光景はなかなかのインパクトです。
ここの何よりの特徴は、メロンの売り方にあります。光センサー(光を当てて糖度=甘さの度合いを測る機械)で1玉ずつ検査し、糖度14度以上のメロンだけが店頭に並びます。つまり、どれを買っても「ハズレ」がないのです。
館内では、ガラス越しにメロンの選果場(検査と箱詰めをする場所)を見学できます。壁には種まきから収穫までの工程の説明があり、光センサーの糖度表示板も。メロン売り場に積み上がった箱がぜんぶ「合格品」とのこと。産地のプライドを感じます！
そして、私のいちばんのおすすめが、このメロンジュースです。淡いグリーンの一杯は、メロンの香りと甘さがぎゅっと詰まっていて、メロンそのものを飲んでいる感じ！これを飲むためだけに立ち寄る価値があります。強くおすすめします。
ほかにも、メロンパンやメロンソフトクリーム、メロンゼリーなどメロン尽くしの品ぞろえ。地元の新鮮な野菜や、おいしいことで知られる七城のお米も買えます。

場所:熊本県菊池市七城町岡田306。国道325号沿い、山鹿の中心部から車で15分ほどです。
営業時間:物産館は9時〜18時(変更の場合があるため、お出かけ前に公式サイトでご確認ください)。
メロンの時期:ハウス栽培が中心のため長い期間並びますが、季節によって品種や在庫は変わります。

Shichijo Melon Dome — Where Only the Sweetest Melons Make the Cut
This post is a side trip from the Yamaga series. Along National Route 325, which runs from Yamaga toward the Minami-Aso area, you’ll find the roadside station “Shichijo Melon Dome” in Shichijo, Kikuchi City — Yamaga’s neighbor. It’s a popular stop on a drive out of Yamaga.
You can’t miss the building: the roofs are shaped like giant melons, stems and all. Three melon domes stand in a row, visible from far away across the surrounding farmland — a green dome floating over the rice fields is quite a sight.
What makes this place special is how the melons are sold. Every single melon is tested with a light sensor — a machine that measures sugar content by shining light through the fruit — and only melons with a sugar level of 14 degrees Brix or higher make it to the shelves. In other words, there are no bad picks here.
Inside, you can watch the sorting facility through a glass wall, where melons are tested and boxed. A wall display explains the whole process from seeding to harvest, and an electronic board shows the sensor readings. When I visited, it read “Higo Green, sugar level: 16.4” — comfortably above the 14-degree standard. After seeing this, walking back to the melon shelves hits differently: every box in those stacked pyramids has passed the test.
And here is my top recommendation: the melon juice, available at the food court. This pale-green cup is packed with melon aroma and sweetness — honestly, better than I imagined. It’s worth stopping here just for this. Highly, highly recommended.
There’s plenty more melon to be had — melon bread, melon soft-serve, melon jelly — plus fresh local vegetables and Shichijo’s rice, which has a strong reputation of its own.

Melon season: Most melons are greenhouse-grown, so they’re available over a long season, though varieties and stock change through the year.
