ー平山温泉「湯の蔵」宿泊記｜宿泊者専用露天風呂と離れで過ごすー
熊本県山鹿市にある平山温泉を訪れました。
平山温泉は、加藤清正が汗疹（あせも）の治療に訪れたという言い伝えが残る温泉地です。温泉街には宿泊施設だけでなく立ち寄り湯も点在していて、気軽に湯めぐりを楽しめる場所として親しまれています。
今回宿泊したのは、その中の一軒である湯の蔵です。
7月の平山温泉は木々の緑が濃く、宿へ向かう道にも夏らしい空気が流れていました。
大きな木の門をくぐると、周囲の雰囲気が少し変わります。
木々に囲まれた建物は落ち着いた佇まいで、苔の残る屋根や木の柱にも年月を感じました。観光地らしい賑わいというより、静かな時間が流れている場所という印象です。
離れへ続く小道
宿の中は、建物のすぐそばまで木々が伸びています。
右手には木造の建物、左手には緑の斜面。苔や石。小道を歩いていると、自然の中へ少しずつ入っていくような気持ちになりました。
全室が離れになっているため、ほかの部屋との距離も程よく保たれています。
宿泊だからこそ楽しめる温泉
平山温泉には立ち寄り湯がいくつもあります。
湯の蔵にも立ち寄り湯がありますが、それとは別に宿泊者専用の露天風呂が用意されています。
日帰り利用とは別の露天風呂なので、宿泊中は時間を気にせず、落ち着いた雰囲気の中で温泉を楽しめます。
さらに客室にはそれぞれ部屋風呂が備わっています。
露天風呂でゆっくり過ごし、部屋へ戻ってから好きな時間にもう一度お風呂へ入る。そんな過ごし方ができるのも宿泊ならではでした。
部屋のお風呂は石造りで、大きな窓の向こうには木々が見えます。
湯船の水面に映る緑を眺めながら入っていると、時間がゆっくり流れているように感じました。
湯上がりのお茶
部屋には急須と湯呑み、お茶菓子が用意されていました。
湯呑みは落ち着いた色合いで、見ていると地元の小岱焼なのかなと思いました。確かなことは分かりませんが、素朴な風合いが木のテーブルにもよく合っています。
温泉のあとにお茶を飲みながら過ごす時間も、この宿の楽しみのひとつでした。
歩くように楽しむ温泉地
冒頭でもふれた通り、平山温泉には宿泊施設だけでなく立ち寄り湯も点在しています。
今回は湯の蔵でゆっくり過ごしましたが、時間があれば温泉街を歩きながら、それぞれのお湯を巡るのも楽しそうです。
静かな温泉地をのんびり歩きたい人には、ちょうどいい場所でした。

A Relaxing Stay at Yunokura in Hirayama Onsen, Kumamoto
I recently visited Hirayama Onsen in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Hirayama Onsen is known as a hot spring town with a long history. According to local tradition, the famous samurai Kato Kiyomasa is said to have visited these hot springs to treat a skin rash. Today, the area is home to several inns and day-use hot springs, making it an enjoyable place to explore at a relaxed pace.
During this trip, I stayed at Yunokura, one of the traditional inns in the area.
The moment I walked through the wooden gate, the atmosphere became noticeably quieter.
The dark wooden buildings blend naturally into the surrounding trees, while patches of moss on the roof add to the feeling that this place has been cared for over many years. Rather than feeling like a busy tourist destination, it feels like a place where time moves a little more slowly.
Walking to the Detached Guest Rooms
A narrow path leads from the entrance to the guest rooms.
Wooden buildings stand on one side, while moss, stones, and trees line the other. The greenery has been left in a natural state instead of being overly landscaped, giving the property a peaceful atmosphere.
Every guest room is a detached cottage, allowing guests to enjoy a quiet stay with a little more privacy.
A Stay That Lets You Enjoy the Hot Springs at Your Own Pace
One of the attractions of Hirayama Onsen is the variety of day-use hot springs throughout the area.
Yunokura also welcomes day visitors, but overnight guests have access to a separate outdoor bath reserved exclusively for guests staying at the inn.
Because this outdoor bath is separate from the public day-use bath, the atmosphere feels especially calm. There is no need to rush, making it easy to enjoy the hot spring at your own pace.
Each room also includes its own private bath.
I enjoyed soaking in the outdoor bath before returning to my room for another relaxing bath later in the evening. Having both options made the stay feel especially comfortable.
The bath in the room is built with beautifully patterned stone, and a large window looks out toward the surrounding trees.
Watching the greenery reflected on the water while soaking quietly became one of the most memorable moments of my stay.

Tea After the Bath
Back in the room, tea and traditional sweets were waiting.
The teapot and ceramic cups had simple, earthy colors that matched the warm wooden interior. Looking at them, I wondered if they might be locally made Shodai ware, although I cannot say for certain.
Small details like these often become the memories that stay with you long after a trip is over.
A Hot Spring Town Worth Exploring
Hirayama Onsen is more than just one inn.
The town has several hot spring facilities, including places where visitors can simply stop in for a bath without staying overnight.
This time I spent my stay relaxing at Yunokura, but on a future visit I would like to walk around the town and experience some of the other baths as well.
If you enjoy quiet hot spring towns where you can slow down and take your time, Hirayama Onsen is well worth a visit.
